Don’t Wait Another Two Years: Sign for Dark Skies Now

Billboard Over bright

Australia is at a critical crossroads. The petition to legislate light pollution reduction is gaining momentum, but we need 10,000 signatures to meet the formal threshold for parliamentary consideration. Every signature counts—and the more we gather, the stronger the message to lawmakers that Australians want action on light pollution.

The Process:

Petitions to the Australian Parliament House (APH) are the first step in turning public concern into legislative action. Once tabled, petitions are reviewed by committees and can spark debate that may lead to a bill. But if this petition falls short, we face another two-year wait before it can be reconsidered. That’s two more years of unnecessary streetlights, billboards, and floodlights spilling into our homes, our communities, and our natural spaces.

Why You Should Sign:

Artificial light at night isn’t just inconvenient—it’s a public health risk, a budget drain, and an environmental threat. Poorly designed lighting disrupts sleep, wastes energy, and harms wildlife. Every signature strengthens our case. The more support we demonstrate, the more likely parliamentarians are to debate and act on this issue. Imagine all those billboards and streetlights glowing in your bedroom two years from now if we don’t succeed now!

Act Now. Protect Health, Budgets, and the Planet:

This petition is about more than starlit skies—it’s about protecting our health, safeguarding wildlife, and reducing unnecessary energy costs. It’s about saying that our nights, our ecosystems, and our communities deserve better. Every signature moves us closer to real change.
