Pygmy Possums, Bogong Moths and Light at Night

Spring has sprung, and Moth Tracker is back again!

Small but mighty Bogong Moths are beginning their long journey towards Australia’s alpine regions to escape the coming heat of summer. Mountain Pygmy-possums will also be waking up from their hibernation hungry for the moths; their key springtime food source. Bogong Moth numbers have sadly plummeted over recent years, which has a devastating impact upon them and the Mountain Pygmy-possums.

The Moth Tracker citizen science initiative is encouraging Australians to log their Bogong Moth sightings on the Moth Tracker website to help both these Endangered moths and the Critically Endangered Mountain Pygmy-possum. Moth Tracker, gathers open-source real time data on the dates, locations and numbers of Bogong Moths travelling during the annual migration periods.

In previous years, partners sharing Moth Tracker with their audiences have increased awareness of the species and greatly helped Moth Tracker to collect higher numbers of Bogong Moth sightings. You can see the Moth Tracker website (and previous years’ results) here: mothtracker.swifft.net.au

Join Zoos Victoria in promoting and using Moth Tracker.

Help alert as many people as possible to be on the lookout in their everyday life for Bogong Moths to log on Moth Tracker.
