On February 4, 2025, the international astronomical community issued an urgent call for action—a plea that resonated across borders and highlighted the global importance of preserving our dark skies. This call, addressed to Chile's top government officials, expressed deep concern over the proposed INNA project by AES Andes. The project, aimed at constructing a large-scale hydrogen and green ammonia industrial complex, threatens one of the world's darkest and most pristine astronomical sites in the Atacama Desert.


Located near world-class observatories such as Cerro Paranal and Cerro Armazones, the Atacama region is celebrated for its exceptional atmospheric stability. This unique environment has enabled groundbreaking discoveries, from the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) capturing the first direct image of an exoplanet to the construction of the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) poised to unravel the mysteries of our universe. Additionally, the nearby Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO Southern Station) is set to explore high-energy cosmic phenomena and push the boundaries of astrophysics.


This international outcry from the astronomical community serves as a stark reminder: our night skies are not only natural wonders but also irreplaceable scientific resources that belong to all of humanity.
