SUMMARY:WEBINAR - IPWEA - Energy Efficient Lighting for communities
DESCRIPTION:Smarter Lighting for Safer\, Energy Efficient Communities\nFeaturing Paul Gowans Street Lighting & Smart Controls Programme Manager – IPWEA \nAs Australia’s cities\, towns\, and infrastructure move toward smarter\, more sustainable systems\, street lighting is at the forefront of innovation. But smarter doesn’t just mean connected — it means better for people\, wildlife\, and the planet. \nIn this timely webinar\, Paul Gowan from the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) will explore how smart lighting technologies can support public safety\, energy efficiency\, and environmental protection — while also helping to reduce light pollution. \nYou’ll learn: \n\nBasic into to smart controls and what they can do\nHow smart controls can be used to substantially reduce the impact of lighting on the night sky and wildlife by permanently trimming excess lighting and dimming (or shutting off) lighting in the middle of the night\nThe status of smart controls in Australia (e.g. regulatory recognition\, take-up\, suppliers) and a brief mention of their widespread adoption overseas.\n\nWhether you’re a council asset manager\, lighting designer\, engineer\, planner or policy-maker\, this session offers valuable insights into how smart lighting can meet community needs and protect natural darkness. \nYour Speaker\nPaul Gowans is a Director of Next Energy Lighting and has three decades managing public lighting networks for UK councils and running a public lighting contractor in the UK. In Australia\, he is best known for his work leading the City of Sydney’s pioneering and highly successful deployment of LEDs (the first large LED deployment in Australia and the first long-term outsourced public lighting contract). Paul sits on two key Standards Australia lighting committees and is the past chairman of the Scottish Region Institution of Lighting Engineers. Paul is a Member of IPWEA and the IESANZ.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR - Dr Kellie Pendoley / Light Pollution Guidelines
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an enlightening webinar featuring Dr. Kellie Pendoley\, a leading expert in environmental science and light pollution. Dr. Pendoley will delve into the development and application of the National Light Pollution Guidelines for Wildlife\, which she co-authored. These guidelines provide a comprehensive framework for assessing and managing the impacts of artificial light on various wildlife species\, including marine turtles\, seabirds\, and migratory shorebirds. \nIn this session\, Dr. Pendoley will discuss the principles of best practice lighting design\, methods for measuring biologically relevant light\, and strategies for mitigating the adverse effects of light pollution on wildlife. She will also share insights from her extensive experience in marine conservation biology and artificial light assessment. \nThis webinar is essential for environmental professionals\, urban planners\, policymakers\, and anyone interested in understanding and reducing the ecological impacts of artificial lighting. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from one of Australia’s foremost authorities on light pollution and its effects on wildlife. \nAbout Dr. Kellie Pendoley:\nDr. Kellie Pendoley is the Executive Director and Principal Scientist at Pendoley Environmental\, a consultancy specializing in marine conservation biology and artificial light assessment. With nearly four decades of experience\, she has been instrumental in developing strategies to mitigate the ecological impacts of light pollution. Dr. Pendoley has served on the board of the International Dark-Sky Association and is a founding director of the Australasian Dark Sky Alliance. Her work has significantly contributed to the advancement of light pollution guidelines and conservation efforts both nationally and internationally.
