SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Night-Time Street Lighting and Crime – Dr. Phil Edwards
DESCRIPTION:Webinar: Night-Time Street Lighting and Crime – Dr. Phil Edwards\nDid switching off street lights at night increase crime—or actually reduce it? Dr. Phil Edwards from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine\, and leader of the LANTERNS Project\, presents new NIHR-funded research showing that streets with part-night lighting (PNL) saw vehicle thefts halved compared to the same streets before PNL. \nDrawing on 10 years of police crime data from Thames Valley\, the study examined the effects of PNL\, dimming\, and white light on multiple crime types\, including residential burglary\, robbery\, vehicle crime\, and violence. The findings challenge common assumptions about street lighting and public safety\, highlighting how careful lighting design can save energy without compromising safety. \nJoin this webinar to hear from one of the UK’s leading experts in crime\, public health\, and street lighting\, and learn how evidence-based lighting strategies can make our streets safer and more sustainable. \nYour Speaker \nDr. Phil Edwards is a British statistician\, epidemiologist\, and academic. He is a Chartered Statistician of the Royal Statistical Society and a professor in the Department of Population Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). Dr. Edwards’ research focuses on injury epidemiology and prevention\, as well as data collection methodology. He has received grants from institutions including the Department of Health and the National Institute for Health and Care Research. He earned a BSc in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Warwick and a PhD in Epidemiology from LSHTM. Dr. Edwards has held academic positions at Newcastle University\, University College London\, and LSHTM\, where he has been a faculty member since 2001.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR - The Impacts of ALAN on Marine Environments
DESCRIPTION:Light at Night and Our Oceans with Mariana Mayer Pinto\nArtificial light at night doesn’t just affect our skies—it reaches into our oceans\, with profound impacts on marine life and coastal ecosystems. Join Professor Mariana Mayer Pinto\, Impact Ambassador for the Australasian Dark Sky Alliance\, highlighted speaker at Valuing Darkness 2025\, and 2025 Eureka Prize winner for her pioneering research on seawalls\, as she explores how coastal environments are being transformed by light pollution. \nFrom altering the behaviour of marine species to affecting entire ecosystems\, Mariana’s work demonstrates why protecting natural darkness is critical for both healthy oceans and resilient coastal communities. This webinar is a unique opportunity to hear from one of Australia’s leading marine ecologists about the connections between our night skies and the health of our seas. \nDon’t miss this chance to learn\, ask questions\, and discover what we can do to reduce light at night in our coastal areas. \nYour Speaker \nMariana Mayer Pinto is a Scientia Senior Lecturer in the School of Biological\, Earth and Environmental Science at UNSW and 2025 Eureka Prize winner for her work on seawalls. She obtained her PhD in Marine Sciences from the University of Sydney (2009) and holds a MSc in Zoology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Prior to her academic career\, she worked as a private consultant\, leading data analyses for one of Australia’s largest environmental projects—the Gorgon Project (Chevron). Mariana is also an Impact Ambassador for the Australasian Dark Sky Alliance and a highlighted speaker at Valuing Darkness 2025.
